How It Works

This calculator uses the Morey equation to estimate beer color from your grain bill:

  1. MCU (Malt Color Units) per grain = (weight in lbs × Lovibond) / volume in gallons
  2. Total MCU = sum of all grain MCUs
  3. SRM = 1.4922 × MCU0.6859
  4. EBC = SRM × 1.97

The Morey equation is more accurate than a simple linear MCU conversion, especially for darker beers, because it accounts for the diminishing color contribution of additional dark malts.

Color reference: 2–4 SRM = Pale Lager, 6–9 = Pale Ale, 10–18 = Amber, 19–26 = Brown, 27–40 = Stout, 40+ = Imperial Stout.
